In the heart of man,
Is planted the thought;
The consciousness of eternity,
And the longing after it.
Other creatures are content,
Immersed it their time;
We bespeak another nature:
Disturbed by a thought,
Which shines high above
The roaring sea of circumstance,
In which we float.
When we say, eternity flows,
Around this bank,
Or that shoal of time;
Men know what we mean:
Heart answers unto heart;
And, silently, in each heart,
Lies that solemn thought:
Forever .......
It is a primal thought,
Deep in the soul of men:
A consciousness;
Outside the bounds of time;
Wherein we seek a beauty,
Beyond all that is lovely;
That draws us willingly unto God.
